Using Tags to organize your songs

Tags is a feature that was added in version 3.50.

You can tag songs with any keyword that you choose. Some examples of tag names are Acoustic, Worship, Band name, Horn songs, Singer name, etc…

Tags are used to group songs with the keyword that you choose. You can create as many tags as you want. A song can have multiple tags. For example, a song can be tagged with Acoustic and Worship.

How to use Tags:

  1. Open the main menu in the Android app by tapping the upper left hamburger button or swipe your finger from the left of the screen to the right.
  2. Tap the add button and type a name for your tag.
  3. Tap the Tag that you created. This will take you to the song catalog that contains the tagged songs. The song list should be empty after you add the tag.
  4. While you are in the tagged song list tap the + button. This will give you three options:
    1. Add Song – This allows you to manually add a new song. After add the song it will be tagged with the selected tag name.
    2.  From Catalog – This shows you your entire song catalog. Check all the songs that you want to tag with the selected tag name.
    3. Lyric Search – This option allows you search for a song on the internet. After you add the song your searched for it will be tagged with the selected tag.

Filtering by Tags in the song catalog

  1. Open the main menu and select Songs.
  2. Tap the menu in the upper right with 3 dots and choose “Filter by Tags”
  3. Select the tags that you want to filter the song catalog by

After you have a filter setup if you want to clear the filter follow the steps above but for step 3 choose “Clear filters”

Filters are shared between the Songs and the “From Catalog” option when adding songs to a setlist. You can clear the filter in both views.

 

Using dropbox with Setlist Helper for Android

In all the steps below the files will be downloaded locally to the Setlist Helper documents directory. A “Dropbox” folder will be created in the directory. By default the directory is {internalSDCard}/SetlistHelper. This can be changed by tapping “Preferences” in the navigation menu of the app. Tap “Documents directory” to change directory.

Import

Open the app and tap Songs in the navigation menu.
At the upper right of the Songs list tap the menu button and choose “Import”.
Tap the dropbox button in the upper right.
Choose a dropbox directory that contains any of these files pdf, txt, docx, doc, rtf, jpg, png, chopro, and pro files.
Tap the save button at the bottom of the file browser.
The app will iterate through the file types listed above in the directory and create songs and attach the document to the song.
You can follow the steps again and re-import the files. It will look for new files or updates to the files.

Export

Tap Songs in the navigation menu.
At the upper right of the Songs list tap the menu button and choose “Export”.
Tap the dropbox button in the upper right.
Choose a dropbox directory that you want to export files to.
Tap the save button at the bottom of the file browser.
The export will create text files (pro file extension) to the selected dropbox directory. This is the way users can backup their lyrics.

Import a single file

Open the navigation menu of the app and tap songs.
Tap the plus button and choose “Add song” or edit an existing song by tapping the circle with a down arrow next to the song and select “Edit”.
Type a song name in the “Name” field.
Tap the document icon next to the “Document” text field.
Tap dropbox in the upper right.
Choose (Tap) one of these files pdf, txt, docx, doc, rtf, jpg, png, chopro, and pro files.
Tap the “Save” button in the file explorer.
Tap the “Save” button in the Song add activity. After you do this the file will be downloaded.

Import audio file

Follow the steps above for “Import single file” but tap the edit icon next to the “Audio”  text field.
The audio file will be downloaded after you save the song.

Navigate to the lyrics on your song.
In the upper right tap the menu button.
Choose Attach audio.
Tap dropbox in the upper right.
Choose (Tap) one of your audio or midi files.
Tap the “Save” button in the file explorer.
Tap the “Save” button in the Song add activity. After you do this the file will be downloaded.

Update dropbox files

Open the navigation menu of the app and tap songs.
At the upper right of the Songs list tap the menu button and choose “Update dropbox files”.
This feature will look at all the dropbox files that are attached to Songs. It will download the files if they are not there or update file that need to be updated.
This is useful if you have multiple devices and want to download the files on another device.

Sharing Songs and Setlists

Sharing Songs and Setlists is useful if you want to:

  1. Share with other people.
  2. Have your data on multiple devices.
  3. Create multiple accounts for you and share common songs between the accounts. For example, if you have a Solo project and a Band you can share common songs between the 2 projects.

 

Share your account with your band members or other devices.

The easiest way to share is to have one Setlist Helper account and share the account information with your band members. Or if you have multiple devices you log in to your account on any device.

The steps for this are simple:

  1. On your device go to the Setlist Helper app. On the home page there is a “Log in” button. Tap this and type your account information.
  2. After entering your log in information tap log in. If your log in is successful the “Sync” will start and it will sync the songs and setlists from your account.

After syncing  your Song and Setlists are stored on your device and are available for offline use.

The problem with this method is any changes anyone makes with change it for everyone.

Use the share button on www.setlisthelper.com to share your songs or setlists with other accounts.

This method is useful if you have some songs in your account that other people don’t need to know about. For example, if you have 2 bands and the some songs are played by both bands but other are not. You can also create 2 accounts for yourself if you want to share between 2 accounts. In the app you can log into the different accounts.

Share songs between 1 or more accounts.
  1.  Log into your www.setlisthelper.com account on your laptop or desktop computer. Go to the “Song Catalog” tab. Select a song and click the share button.
  2. Enter the username of the other account you want to share with then click share.

This method only allows you to share one song at a time. To share more follow the directions below.

Share Setlists between 1 or more accounts
  1.  Log into your www.setlisthelper.com account on your laptop or desktop computer. Go to the “Setlist” tab.
  2. Select a Setlist and click the share button.
  3. Enter the username of the other account you want to share with then click share.

This method allows you to share more that one song.

NOTE: Audio does not get uploaded to http://www.setlisthelper.com when you sync. This option will be available in the future. However, you can still easily sync you audio and share with your devices. See the “Sharing audio between devices” section below.

Playing audio:

“Show Audio Player” menu option is only visible when you have a song attached and the song is located on the device. If you sync multiple devices and don’t have the audio the menu option won’t be there.

Changing the Songs or Setlist list size

With version 3.07 of Setlist Helper for Android you can change the size of the Songs or Setlist list.

There are 3 sizes:

  1. Small (Default)
  2. Medium
  3. Large

On the homepage of the app go to Preferences.

Tap on User Interface > List Size. Then choose the size you want.

Browsing for documents and audio files on your external SD card.

With version 3.07 you can browse for media on your SD card.

Using the File Browser

Choosing any of the options in the “Getting to the File Browser” section below will open the File Browser window. By default the File Browser will open to the home directory of your internal SD card.

Each device may differ on how to browse to the external SD card. These instructions are based on a Samsung Galaxy Tab.

After the File Browser is open follow these steps:

1. Tap “Parent Directory”. This should be the first item in the File Browser list.

2. Tap “mnt”

3. Tap “extSdCard”.

“extSdCard is your external SD card that you inserted into your device. Choose the file that you want or import documents from here.

 

Getting to the File Browser

You can browse for audio files or documents with the File Browser in Setlist Helper.

  • In the Songs > Edit view. You can get to this with these steps:
    1. Go to the “Songs”.
    2. Tap the circle with a down arrow.
    3. Choose “Edit.
      • You can browse for documents by taping the document icon next to the “Document” field.
      • Browse for audio files by tapping the pencil next to the “Audio” field
  • On the “Lyric” screen. Follow these steps:
    1. Go to “Songs”.
    2. Tap a song in the list. This will take you to the lyric screen.
    3. In the upper right there is a menu button.
    4. Tap the menu and you can choose:
      • Attach Audio
      • Attach Document
    5. This is doing the same thing as the first option. If you follow the first option you will see the document paths on the song edit window.
  • Choose a documents directory in the preferences.
    1. On the homepage of the app tap “Preferences”
    2. Tap “Document Settings” > Documents Directory
      • This allows you to choose the directory for importing documents. See Attaching Documents for more information.

Making lyrics easy to navigate.

In Version 3.07 navigation of your lyrics is easier.

There are 2 ways to navigate in your lyrics. Both are done by tapping the bottom or top of the lyrics screen.

  1. Move you to a section such as Chorus, Verse, etc… by tapping the top or bottom of the lyric screen.
  2. Page each section such as Chorus, Verse, etc… by tapping the top or bottom of the lyric screen.

Option #1 is the default. You can page sections by following these steps:

  1. Go to “Songs” and tap one of your songs.
  2. Tap the menu button in the upper right of the lyrics screen.
  3. Choose the “Page Sections” menu option

After you choose this option each section will appear in a page when you tap the top or bottom of the screen.

In order to create sections in your lyrics you need to insert one of the tags below surrounded by square brackets. For example, [Chorus]

The following section names are supported:

  • chorus
  • outro
  • prechorus
  • verse
  • repeat
  • refrain
  • pre-chorus
  • bridge
  • climb
  • coda
  • solo
  • keyboard
  • guitar
  • bass
  • horn
  • Instrumental
  • Interlude
  • intro

As long as your first word is one of the above you can add any other words to the end. For example:

[Chorus 2 times]

[Guitar Solo]

Pausing lyrics auto-scroll

With version 3.05 you can add a pause statement to the lyrics.

This is the pause statement:

{pause:10}

Place that in your lyrics to pause the auto-scroll. The number after the semicolon is the seconds to pause. In the example above the auto-scroll is paused for 10 seconds.

You can also write your pause statement like this:

{pause:1:12}

This will pause the auto-scroll for 1 minute 10 seconds.

If you want to cancel the autoscroll before the pause ends you can tap the “Continue” button. Also, you can double tap the lyrics to start them again and cancel the auto-scroll.

 

Metronome

In version 2.17 of Setlist Helper for Android a metronome was added. You need to purchase the Setlist and Lyric Version to use this feature.

To get to the metronome open a song. Choose “Show Metronome” from the menu as shown below.

After selecting “Show Metronome” you will see the metronome as shown below

Select the play button in the upper right of the metronome to start it. You can adjust the tempo by moving the slider or typing the tempo where you see the tempo. The save button will save the tempo to the song attributes.

Transpose

In version 2.14 of Setlist Helper for Android the ability to transpose a song to a different key was added.

In order to do this your song needs to use the Chord Pro (chopro) notation for a chord. Below is a sample lyric:
[C]Hey, where did [F]we go, da[C]ys when the ra[G]ins came

The above notation will place the chord above the lyric.

To transpose a song in Setlist Helper go the any of your lyrics. Click the menu and select Transpose as shown below.

When you select Transpose your screen will have an action bar at the top that will let you transpose the chords up or down 1 semitone otherwise known as half-step.
